LAVA TUBE MISSION LINKS:

The link below will take you to a page that explains one of the goals of the Mars Exploration Program. This is to ” Characterize the Geology of Mars”. http://mars.nasa.gov/programmissions/science/goal3/ This next web page has 4 videos that can be useful for the students to learn how to use the Vernier Magnetic Field Sensor. I think the 1st, 3rd, and last video will be useful in determining the a portion of the missions we make for them. https://www.vernier.com/manuals/mg-bta/ This website is full of info about Mars’ geology: http://www.slideshare.net/pathupawar/geology-of-mars A piece about the significance of Lava Tubes on Mars. Pretty Interesting. It has an “abstract” so get your dictionary out ;^) http://www.argoverse.com/LAVATUBE.html A You Tube video explaining the electromagnetic field of Mars and its history. Which also speaks to the result of having lost it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5cAD2MI7mA Photo of lava tube on Mars http://www.space.com/18519-mars-caves-lava-tubes-photos.html Could Humans Set Up Camp in Lava Tubes on Mars https://lightsinthedark.com/2015/03/04/could-humans-set-up-camp-in-martian-lava-tubes/ http://www.oregonl5.org/mist/ltube96.html Virtual Lava Cave and info http://www.goodearthgraphics.com/virtual_tube/virtube.html This one mentions shield volcanoes http://www.kids-fun-science.com/lava-caves.html http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/lava-tubes Recent finds on the Martian surface http://www.marsdaily.com/reports/New_Year_yields_interesting_bright_soil_for_Opportunity_rover_999.html?mc_cid=ef26024013&mc_eid=5a2393b87b http://www.marsdaily.com/reports/Hues_in_a_Crater_Slope_999.html?mc_cid=ef26024013&mc_eid=5a2393b87b http://www.space.com/9433-habitable-hotspots-mars-volcano-vents-signs.html (hot spots) http://mars.nasa.gov/mer/newsroom/pressreleases/20040318a.html (blueberries) http://www.popsci.com/article/technology/curiosity-finds-water-and-poison-martian-soil http://www.space.com/21554-mars-toxic-perchlorate-chemicals.html (perchlorates) http://marsed.asu.edu/sites/default/files/msip_reports/Martian%20lava%20tubes.pdf (Martian Lava Tubes) http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/store/10.1029/98JE01126/asset/jgre874.pdf;jsessionid=369EA62290AB77FEB6B19B33C981FC36.f04t04?v=1&t=iyxkm2rp&s=0fae6cb6780b2aa42ac4f82d69dcc5a8d34eba31 (Lava Flows of Elysium Planita) https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn9220-lava-tubes-snapped-snaking-across-mars/ (Lava tubes snaking across Mars) http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2002/pdf/1410.pdf (Lava tubes in Alba Patera Region) Video of how to test minerals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32NG9aeZ7_c One Way Mission To Mars: Colonizing the Red Planet – http://cosmology.com/OneWayMissionToMars.html Rock and mineral identification – https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/pavement/pccp/fhwahi91205.pdf Atlas of Volcanic Landforms on Mars – https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1534/report.pdf Rock and mineral Identification – http://www.minsocam.org/msa/collectors_corner/id/rock_key.htm Rock and mineral Identification – www.comparerocks.com

Atmosphere, water, and soil testing

Equipment information:

  • Salinity meter: Measures the dissolved salt content of a solution. Salinity affects both electrical conductivity and specific gravity of a solution. May be used to test if water is safe for irrigation (huge component in agriculture); also determines how runoff and effluent discharges influence aquatic systems
  • Thermal camera: Device that forms an image using infrared radiation. When objects become wet, it will eventually cool and evaporate. The thermal camera does not “see” water, but rather the effects of water on temperature and environment.
  • pH sensor: Measures the hydrogen-ion concentration (or pH) in a solution indicating its acidity or alkalinity. Soil pH can influence plant growth and nutrient concentration.  http://www.esf.edu/pubprog/brochure/soilph/soilph.htm
  • Spectrometer: A scientific instrument originally used to split light into an array of separate colors, called a spectrum.
  • CO2 and O2 sensors: Reads the amount of CO2 and O2 within a given sample
